Drink Your Veggies

I love a good smoothie. It is one of my favorite things for breakfast, lunch, snack or post-gym. Aside from it being sweet and delicious, it is packed full of fruits, veggies and, if you like, healthy supplements.

There is ZERO prep for this smoothie recipe. Unless you count grabbing all your ingredients from the refrigerator- which I don’t. You will need to break out a blender. if you don’t have one, I have linked one that I like below.

Add & Blend

This smoothie makes two servings. I love a green smoothie and start with 8 ounces of baby leaf spinach as my base. This is a great way to get in servings of vegetables and leafy greens. I add the spinach to my blender with 2 cups of water. You could also add fresh fruit juice of choice, but this could change the flavor or make it too sweet. If you are using a juice high in sugar it could also ruin or at least lessen the nutritional value of the smoothie.

I blend the spinach and water until it is a pretty green liquid. I don’t like any spinach chunks or pieces in my smoothie, so I choose my “liquify” setting and keep it going until it looks like green juice.

Next, I start adding the frozen fruits. Why frozen and not fresh, you ask? You can absolutely use fresh fruit- and you should if you have it and need to use it. But I love using frozen fruit because it gives you a cold icy smoothie without needing to add ice to the blender, which can be a pain and waters down the smoothie.

So, start adding your frozen fruit to the blender. Add only 1/2 cup - 1 cup at a time. The frozen fruit can be harder to blend and your blender will get clogged if you put too much in too soon. If it does get clogged, stop your blender- make sure it is stopped…maybe even off- open the lid and using a long spoon or knife, stir the mixture to loosen any clog or jam. Remove the spoon or knife, put the lid back on, and keep blending until it is all smooth.

Once little to no chunks remain, add more fruit. Repeat this process until you have added all fruit.

Once you have added all fruit and it reaches desired consistency, then add your supplements. My favorite supplements include chia seeds, moringa powder, collagen and creatine. Occasionally I will add protein powder, but this can change the flavor and consistency of the smoothie. These supplements do not need to be blended long. They just need to be stirred in so that they are completely mixed. WARNING: BE CAREFUL with fiber-rich supplements if you’re using this recipe before a long run or workout! If you are not used to moringa, chia seeds or protein powder, these supplements could cause stomach issues.

Pour and serve your smoothie immediately!

If you only want 1 serving, but follow this recipe and make 2, you can store the other half of the smoothie in a storage glass or blender bottle and keep it in the refrigerator to enjoy later or the next day. I would only keep this in the fridge for a day or 2, but to each their own!

As mentioned, you will need a blender to make this recipe. I have linked one below that I like, along with links to some of my favorite smoothie supplements.
